ECG in only 30 seconds? Here’s how!

The problem with heart disease is that the first symptom is often fatal.”- Michael Phelps

According to a study from the American Heart Association, 45 percent of heart attacks occur without any symptoms. This makes taking care of your heart health even more important! This can be done in several ways which we will discuss in this article, so keep reading.

Heart disease is a leading cause of death worldwide, and while there are plenty of ways like screening, doing routine health checks, exercising, and having a good diet which can reduce your risk of heart disease, but one sure shot way to check your heart health is by doing an ECG regularly.

What is an ECG?

An ECG/EKG, acronym of  electrocardiogram, is a simple test used to diagnose heart conditions like heart attacks, rhythm abnormality, heart blocks, etc, and monitor heart health. It is a common and painless test that records the electrical activity of the heart and is non invasive.

Importance of doing an ECG test

ECG is recommended to detect:-

  • Look for the cause of chest pain.
  • Identify irregular heartbeats.
  • Understand how well your medicines are working.
  • See how well an implanted pacemaker is working.
  • Detecting heart attacks.
  • Determine your heart’s overall health before and after surgery.
  • Screening tool for Heart Health.

The traditional way of doing an ECG test involves using electrodes which are small patches that stick to the skin and placing them in certain body parts such as the chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes are connected to the ECG machines through wire leads and the ECG machine then records the electrical activity of the heart which is traced on a screen or printed out. During the ECG test, no electricity is sent into the body and the test is carried out while lying down and resting.

But this traditional way is time-consuming, limited to only hospitals/certain labs, and awkward if full privacy is not ensured, hence researchers/innovators have come up with a new age way which is quicker and more convenient to check ECG in 30 seconds, on the go, anywhere, anytime.
